âšī¸ Important Information
This is a high-altitude route on a road that is open for only part of the year. The camping area near Chandratal sits at roughly 4,200 metres. Altitude sickness is a real risk, particularly if you travel up from the plains quickly. A night in Manali beforehand helps and anyone with a heart or breathing condition should speak to a doctor first.
â FAQs
What makes Chandratal Lake so famous and where is it located?
Chandratal Lake (meaning "Moon Lake") is a high-altitude, crystal-clear glacial lake located at 14,100 feet (4,297 meters) in the Spiti region of Lahaul & Spiti district. It is famous for its crescent shape, turquoise waters that change color throughout the day and its status as a protected Ramsar Wetland site.
Can we camp right on the edge of Chandratal Lake?
No. To protect the fragile alpine ecosystem and sacred waters of the lake, camping directly on the lake shore is strictly prohibited by government regulations. Designated campsites are set up approximately 2 to 3 km before the lake. Visitors walk or drive to the vehicle parking area and take a gentle 1 km nature walk to reach the water.
What is the best time of year to visit Chandratal Lake?
The tour is operational seasonally from late May/June through late September or early October, depending on snow clearance by the BRO. June to August offers pleasant temperatures and full glacial streams, while September brings crisp clear skies and brilliant autumn colors.
Is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a concern on this day tour?
Yes. Rapidly ascending from Manali (6,700 ft) to Chandratal Lake (14,100 ft) in a few hours can cause mild altitude sickness symptoms like shortness of breath or headaches. We equip our private vehicles with portable oxygen cylinders, advise sipping water continuously and urge guests to walk at a relaxed pace near the lake.
